RePLAY: It’s all about Nintendo as the creator of Mario ponders on The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past,
a ‘supermario4.com’ domain is discovered and Nintendo Germany is not attending
Gamescom this year.
When Shigeru Miyamoto
hinted at a Legend of Zelda: A Link to
the Past remake for the 3DS last year, the internet erupted into angelic
choirs and heavenly lights. Okay, maybe not, but I was certainly excited!
Since then Miyamoto
has reconsidered the idea from A Link to
the Past remake into an entirely new game in the same style.
“I think the answer
would be the same if we’re talking about just porting, but I think I’d be even more
interested in creating something new maybe based on, or starting from, A Link To The Past,” Miyamoto told Edge
in Paris. “I think it’s important to bring some really new software.”
If Nintendo were to
make such a game, Miyamoto concedes that he wouldn’t be the one to lead it. It
would mean handing the reins to some directors that may not share his vision.
“To be very honest and
open, it really depends on the directors that have time at the moment as well,”
he said. “Some directors, I can give them the title and I know they will do
something great with it. Other directors I’m not so 100 percent confident [in],
so they’re the ones I’d rather take a more remake approach to the title. It
really depends on that as well.”

We haven’t had a
numbered Super Mario Bros. title
since… well, Super Mario Bros. 3 for
the NES in 1988. That may change as Nintendo registered a domain recently for ‘supermario4.com’.
Of course, this doesn’t
necessarily mean a Super Mario Bros. 4
is in the works as companies ‘hold’ onto URLs all the time, but it’s definitely
something to look out for.

Oddly enough, Nintendo
Germany is not attending the Gamescom convention in Cologne this year. Although
the company has always attended the show, it is instead focusing on “sampling
events” around Germany with the Wii, 3DS and the upcoming Wii U.
“Whilst Gamescom is a
fantastic show, we have taken the decision not to attend this year’s event,”
Nintendo said in a released statement. “We are planning a number of sampling
events throughout Germany in which our fans will have the opportunity to play
upcoming Nintendo 3DS, Wii and Wii U titles.
“Further details will
be announced soon.”
