Headline RePLAY – 6.22.12

Today on Headline RePLAY: Restrictions on new digital purchases of Diablo III, Persona 4: Golden boosts much needed PS Vita sales and Namco Bandai joins the Super Smash Bros. team.

In a move that is likely to spark a debate over consumer rights, Blizzard has announced yesterday that new purchases of digital versions of Diablo III are subject to content restrictions up to 72 hours.

Most specifically, digital version buyers are stuck on Starter Edition limitations, such as:
  • Access up to Act 1 of the Skeleton King encounter.
  • Level 13 cap.
  • Matchmaking only with other Starter Edition players.
  • No Auction House access of any kind.
  • The inability to trade and drop items for other players to receive.
  • Restricted players are locked out of chatting in public or game channels.
  • Restricted players cannot attach a custom message to friend requests, but can send/accept friend requests and play with friends.
  • Users can only play in their home region.
In a forum post, support forum agent Kaltonis explains that the “review period” was necessary to combat fraud and other malicious activities that can “weaken everyone’s play experience.” Kaltonis adds that the delay is “no longer than three days” and can be over “often much quicker than that.”

Blizzard further clarified in a statement released to Kotaku, stating that the move was to “help ensure the integrity of the game and auction house service” and to “deter credit card fraud.”

The company says the content restrictions are only until payment verification is complete, and that most payments are approved and restrictions are lifted within a day. Blizzard also assures players that it will monitor player feedback and will continue to “evaluate the best methods for ensuring a positive experience for everyone.”

Additionally, Blizzard acknowledges that there were players that purchased the game digitally after patch 1.0.3 were unintentionally affected by the security changes, and ended up capped at level 13 and content locked at Act I. Blizzard says they are working to correct the issues as soon as possible, and will provide another update when there are more details to share.

The release of Persona 4: Golden provided the PS Vita with a much needed sales boost in Japan this week by single-handedly moving over 34,000 units. The last time the PS Vita saw numbers above the 30,000 mark was in early January, before sales started declining.

Most tellingly, the Persona remake alone broke PS Vita software records by moving 137,076 units since its release four days ago.

Namco Bandai is joining the Super Smash Bros. development team alongside Sora, according to a joint-statement released by the two companies.

Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai says announcement was made so he can develop the game with some freedom. He said the project has “just gotten started” and the game was announced before any actual development.

Sakurai commented how the prototype prepared by Namco Bandai’s special team “looks pretty good” and that it’s “working great.”

Namco Bandai for their part wants to assure fans that their “dream team” is on the job, such as Yoshito Higuchi, the producer and director of the Tales series, Tetsuya Akatsuka, producer and director of Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs., the art/sound director of SoulCalibur and the main development team staff from Tekken.

“We will fully utilize our experience and knowledge in action/fighting game development, technical capability, and organizational strength,” promised Namco Bandai’s Masaya Kobayashi, “and we hereby promise you that we will develop the best and most powerful Super Smash Bros. title ever! Don’t miss it!”

Today on Headline RePLAY: The Nintendo 3D hits another sales milestone, the Star Wars: The Old Republic team experience layoffs and Blizzard responds to Diablo III hacking claims.

As PlayStation Vita sales continue to drop in Japan, Nintendo 3DS sales continue to rise as it crossed the six million mark this week in domestic sales, according to retail tracker Enterbrain, Famitsu’s publisher.

From its debut on February 26, 2011 to May 20, 2012, the handheld sold a grand total of 6,017,206 units in Japan alone.

According to Andriasang and Media Create data, the Nintendo 3DS was also the fastest handheld ever to reach 5 million in sales.

BioWare doctors Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka have confirmed layoffs with the Star Wars: The Old Republic’s development team today in a statement on the MMO’s official forums.

“Sadly, we are bidding farewell to some talented, passionate and exceptionally hard-working people who helped make SWTOR a reality,” said the BioWare doctors. “Impacting people’s lives this way is always very hard, but we’re ensuring the affected people are treated with dignity, fairness, and respect.”

Despite the layoffs, Dr. Zeschuk and Muzyka wanted to reassure fans that business will continue as usual with SWTOR. “We still have a very substantial development team working on supporting and growing the game, and we feel we are in a strong position, with your continued involvement and feedback, to continue to build Star Wars: The Old Republic as one of the most compelling and successful online experiences in the world today.”

In a coordinated effort to tackle the Diablo III hacking crisis, Blizzard has rejected allegations that hackers are bypassing authenticators and have devoted forum threads to aid players in buffing their Battle.net account security.

“We’ve been taking the situation extremely seriously from the start, and have done everything possible to verify how and in what circumstances these compromises are occurring,” said Blizzard Community Manager Micah “Bashiok” Whipple.

“Despite the claims and theories being made, we have yet to find any situations in which a person’s account was not compromised through traditional means of someone else logging into their account through the use of their password. While the authenticator isn’t a 100% guarantee of account security, we have yet to investigate a compromise report in which an authenticator was attached beforehand.”

In a separate thread dedicated to Battle.net account security, Community Manager Stephanie “Lylirra” Johnson explains that the rise of compromised accounts amidst the release of a new game is nothing new.

“Historically, the release of a new game—such as a World of Warcraft expansion—will result in an increase in reports of individual account compromises, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing now with Diablo III,” said Lylirra.

“We know how frustrating it can be to become the victim of account theft, and as always, we’re dedicated to doing everything we can to help our players keep their Battle.net accounts safe—and we appreciate everyone who’s doing their part to help protect their accounts as well.”

Today on Headline RePLAY: Japanese retailers are cutting PS Vita prices, 6.5 million people are roosting with Angry Birds and Star Wars: The Old Republic players groove to victory.

The drama of the PS Vita’s launch continues, and this time Japanese retailers are reportedly cutting the price of the 3G model to incentivize customers.

There is an image circulating of one retailer slashing the price of the WiFi/3G model from ¥29,980 to ¥24,999, a 17% reduction.

Reports indicate that the 3G model is a hard sale, as 85% of WiFi-only units were sold compared to the 3G’s 56%.

6.5 million people downloaded Angry Birds on Christmas day. 6.5 MILLION PEOPLE IN ONE DAY. The astronomical number consists of the three Angry Bird titles in addition to paid and free downloads.

AllThingsD observed the number also coincided with the estimated total of smartphone activations that happened over Christmas.

“We’re really excited to have such a massive number of new people get acquainted with Angry Birds over the holidays—we have exciting new releases lined up for 2012, and we can’t wait to introduce them to the public,” Rovio’s Ville Heijari told AllThingsD.

In Star Wars: The Old Republic, dancing is the new Jedi mind trick where enemies end up so captivated that they ignore the barrage of blaster bolts and lightsabers sent their way.

Apparently, using the/getdown command causes an exploit that prevents enemies, even bosses, from locking onto players and causes their attacks to be constantly interrupted.

Members of the Republic and Empire beware, BioWare is aware of this exploit, and even though mention of it was removed from the forums, a fix should be incoming soon.

Today on Headline RePLAY: the ESA explains its support for SOPA, the 3DS makes a rebound and rumor has it that Nintendo’s Wii U is also an e-reader!

Even though major publishers like Nintendo, Sony and Electronic Arts jumped ship last week from supporting the Stop Online Piracy act, the Entertainment Software Association stands firm with its backing for the bill and released a statement today explaining why:

“As an industry of innovators and creators, we understand the importance of both technological innovation and content protection, and do not believe the two are mutually exclusive. Rogue websites – those singularly devoted to profiting from their blatant illegal piracy – restrict demand for legitimate video game products and services, thereby costing jobs. Our industry needs effective remedies to address this specific problem, and we support the House and Senate proposals to achieve this objective. We are mindful of concerns raised about a negative impact on innovation. We look forward to working with the House and Senate, and all interested parties, to find the right balance and define useful remedies to combat willful wrongdoers that do not impede lawful product and business model innovation.”

Additionally, the ESA is aware of objections against SOPA, and responded:

“We are mindful of concerns raised about a negative impact on innovation. We look forward to working with the House and Senate, and all interested parties, to find the right balance and define useful remedies to combat willful wrongdoers that do not impede lawful product and business model innovation.”

The ESA is a video game trade group that is responsible for organizing the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo and its defense of video games as protected speech in the U.S. Supreme Court.  A lot of major publishers are members of the ESA, and therefore, despite their withdrawal from SOPA, are still supporting the bill by proxy.

SOPA’s critics assert that SOPA authorizes content owners to effectively shut down internet websites on the basis of copyright infringement, which includes:

·         Mods
·         “Let’s Play” videos
·         Video replays
·         Video reviews and commentary
·         Unofficial game guides
·         The taking, hosting, and sharing of screenshots, artistic or otherwise
·         Image forums (Reddit, 4chan)

Nintendo sure knows how to make a miraculous comeback. After dismal sales numbers, a major price cut in less than six months, and anxious investors— Nintendo is celebrating the new year with news that that the 3DS crossed over the 4 million units mark.

According to Nintendo, the 3DS sold more than the Wii did in its first nine months. No doubt the sales jump was attributed to the massive price cut and the release of Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.

Needless to say, predictions of the 3DS’s death were highly exaggerated.

Nintendo’s Wii U was met with a lot of comparisons to tablet PCs— and if this rumor of it being an e-reader is true, it will be a dead-on contrast.

According to Forget the Box, Nintendo is planning on making the Wii U into a Kindle or Nook equivalent with the ability to download or stream books, magazines, newspapers or other publications.

But to lend some credence to the rumor, Forget the Box adds that Nintendo is looking into making electronic strategy guides and instruction booklets available for download too.

Considering what we’ve seen of the Wii U, the rumor sounds plausible. However, it is just a rumor and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Headline RePLAY – 12.21.11

Today on Headline RePLAY we have dueling Final Fantasy XIII-2 stories: Final Fantasy XIII-2 sells 500,000 units on the first week, but its sales numbers are a cause for concern and video game robbers pocket-dials 911.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 made its debut this week to over half a million in sales, topping Media Create’s weekly software charts. Interestingly, the sales figure is just for the PlayStation 3 version despite a simultaneous release for the Xbox 360.

However, Gamasutra noted that these sales numbers are around one-third of the sales of the original Final Fantasy XIII two years ago. Most importantly, the site speculates that the sales could reflect “diminished consumer interest in Square-Enix’s flagship franchise.”

It would also be on par with the company’s own observations a few months ago: that the Final Fantasy brand was “greatly damaged” by the release of Final Fantasy XIV, a MMORPG, in September 2010.

In an ironic twist, two thieves that couldn’t stop boasting about their video game spoils taken from a Target got caught by a 911-operator that was listening in on the conversation.

According to police in Madison, Wisconsin, one of the robbers pocket-dialed 911 and proceeded to talk about how well their operation went and mocked other thieves for being caught. The two men allegedly stole the games to resell for a profit at a local video game store.

The operator recorded the conversation for an hour and informed the police, who beat the shoplifters to the store and waited for them with guns drawn.

Headline RePLAY – 12.20.11

Today’s Headline RePLAY is all about Sony: the PS Vita sells over 321,000 units in its first week, Sony apologizes and resolves Vita’s launch problems and the company gets sued over its "no sue" clause.

Defying predictions of a “premature horrible death,” the PS Vita sold 321,407 units in its first week. The sales numbers were reported today by Famitsu.com using statistics from Enterbrain and covers two days of sales: December 17th and 18th.

In comparison, the Nintendo 3DS sold 371,326 units from February 26th and 27th of this year and in 2004 the PSP only sold 166,074 units on December 12th.

According to Sony, they only shipped 500,000 units but a Mainichi Digital contributor claimed to have heard reports of an initial shipment of 700,000 units prior to release.

The PS Vita was only out for two days and already the complaints from consumers are flooding in: everything from software bugs to unresponsive touchscreens and complete system freezes.

As if Sony was aware of the problems in advance, the company was quick to deliver an apology and even dispatch a software update to resolve the issues.

Back in September, Sony updated its PlayStation Network Terms of Service with a “no sue” clause to prevent class-action lawsuits. Now, ironically, Sony is the one being sued over the “no sue” policy.

According to Gamespot, a Northern California man is leading the charge with a suit filed last month that alleges Sony engaged in unfair business practices by forcing consumers to either give up their right to file a class-action lawsuit or surrender PSN access, which was effectively paid for when the hardware was purchased.

The suit states that Sony buried the “no sue” clause near the bottom of the 21-page TOS and avoided posting an accessible version of the form online, although the company has historically done so. The suit adds that while Sony has an opt out of the provision, the only method to do so was to contact the company in writing (no other forms of communication accepted) within 30 days.
