Headline RePLAY - 7.11.12

Today on Headline RePLAY: Mr. Tekken reiterated his stance on DLC and fan demand, Tekken characters probably won’t be in the next Super Smash Bros. and Project Sora closes its doors.

In light of Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime’s comments that fans are “insatiable” and Capcom’s on-disc DLC controversy, Katsuhiro Harada, a.k.a. “Mr. Tekken,” explains his heated letter to fans last month and repeated his uncompromising stance that there will never be paid-DLC characters in Tekken.

“Maybe 99 percent of the fanbase I interact with on a daily basis are very normal and straightforward in their opinions. ‘We like this, we don’t like this,’” Harada told Eurogamer. “It’s very simple and easy to understand, and it’s good feedback. I didn’t let it get to me at first, and if it was just me they were spamming it wouldn’t be an issue.”

“But they started spamming different game producers, other people I follow on Twitter, non-gamers related people, even friends, telling them ‘Please tell Harada to do this or that,” he explained. “It was quite embarrassing they were doing this, so I really wanted to stop it. And at the same time, I explained the reasons why the voice actors had changed.”

Harada agreed with Fils-Aime’s statement that it was “impossible” to satisfy the fanbase “100 percent,” but found that “99 percent” was tenable.

“Reggie-san was mentioning that there’s really no end to the requests and expectations from fans, and that I can agree with,” said Harada. “It’s impossible to please everyone 100 percent. 99 percent is maybe possible, by implementing requested features in your game. But you run into problems with securing staff for development. Adhering to fan requests means more work, which means people don’t get the game in their hands as fast as they like. It’s very difficult.

“But with Tekken Tag Tournament 2 we have really gone above and beyond what we normally do for fans on this project. Maybe 99 percent satisfaction can be achieved.”

In stark contrast to Capcom’s recent on-disc DLC practices with Street Fighter X Tekken, Harada was adamant that there won’t be any on-disc DLC or paid-DLC characters. In the interview, however, while Harada reaffirmed his stance on no paid-DLC characters, he conceded that some on-disc DLC may be necessary.

“When you look at DLC, whether paid or free, a lot of titles have it on disc, it’s not that unusual,” he noted. “I’ve been saying that, at least for Tekken, regarding techniques, characters and stages, these three things won’t be charged for, even if they are DLC.

“Saying that, if someone has a particular character they’ve downloaded and they play someone who doesn’t have that character, it might take five minutes for the person to then download the data to play against this person. This wouldn’t be very realistic and wouldn’t give a favorable impression, so we do plan to address these issues. So some content may be on disc, some might not. But since it’s free it shouldn’t be an issue.”

Despite his stance on paid-DLC characters, Harada acknowledged that he is “continually asked” on DLC plans by his higher ups in Namco Bandai.

“Actually this is something my bosses have been asking me for quite a while now—what are our plans for DLC? How much money can we make? They are a company, obviously, in it to make money. So it’s something I’m continually asked even now. But I haven’t changed my stance. If you’re making a fighting game, all of the elements necessary to enjoy it should be on the disc, or should at least be available for free.”

After Namco Bandai announced its involvement in the next Super Smash Bros. game, it was unsurprising to hear that fans were curious on which, if any, new characters from the company’s extensive IP will enter the roster. Probably none from Tekken, if the words from Mr. Tekken himself were any indication.

“That question was one of the most frequently asked questions we got when we announced the project,” Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada told NowGamer. “Especially from abroad. The fans, rather than asking about Tales or Gundam, or some of our other franchises, the fans abroad saw Tekken as one of the key words and took off on that.

“We’re not really sure at this moment but when thinking of the playerbase who is playing Smash Bros, maybe Tekken characters is something they wouldn’t want, so I’ve been pulling back on that a bit. But I don’t know.”

Founded by Masahiro Sakurai in 2009 after the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Project Sora has closed its doors on June 30, 2012. The studio’s one and only release was Kid Icarus: Uprising for the 3DS.

Nothing is known of what will happen to Project Sora’s employees or Sakurai’s status beyond his work with the next Super Smash Bros. installment.

Headline RePLAY – 6.22.12

Today on Headline RePLAY: Restrictions on new digital purchases of Diablo III, Persona 4: Golden boosts much needed PS Vita sales and Namco Bandai joins the Super Smash Bros. team.

In a move that is likely to spark a debate over consumer rights, Blizzard has announced yesterday that new purchases of digital versions of Diablo III are subject to content restrictions up to 72 hours.

Most specifically, digital version buyers are stuck on Starter Edition limitations, such as:
  • Access up to Act 1 of the Skeleton King encounter.
  • Level 13 cap.
  • Matchmaking only with other Starter Edition players.
  • No Auction House access of any kind.
  • The inability to trade and drop items for other players to receive.
  • Restricted players are locked out of chatting in public or game channels.
  • Restricted players cannot attach a custom message to friend requests, but can send/accept friend requests and play with friends.
  • Users can only play in their home region.
In a forum post, support forum agent Kaltonis explains that the “review period” was necessary to combat fraud and other malicious activities that can “weaken everyone’s play experience.” Kaltonis adds that the delay is “no longer than three days” and can be over “often much quicker than that.”

Blizzard further clarified in a statement released to Kotaku, stating that the move was to “help ensure the integrity of the game and auction house service” and to “deter credit card fraud.”

The company says the content restrictions are only until payment verification is complete, and that most payments are approved and restrictions are lifted within a day. Blizzard also assures players that it will monitor player feedback and will continue to “evaluate the best methods for ensuring a positive experience for everyone.”

Additionally, Blizzard acknowledges that there were players that purchased the game digitally after patch 1.0.3 were unintentionally affected by the security changes, and ended up capped at level 13 and content locked at Act I. Blizzard says they are working to correct the issues as soon as possible, and will provide another update when there are more details to share.

The release of Persona 4: Golden provided the PS Vita with a much needed sales boost in Japan this week by single-handedly moving over 34,000 units. The last time the PS Vita saw numbers above the 30,000 mark was in early January, before sales started declining.

Most tellingly, the Persona remake alone broke PS Vita software records by moving 137,076 units since its release four days ago.

Namco Bandai is joining the Super Smash Bros. development team alongside Sora, according to a joint-statement released by the two companies.

Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai says announcement was made so he can develop the game with some freedom. He said the project has “just gotten started” and the game was announced before any actual development.

Sakurai commented how the prototype prepared by Namco Bandai’s special team “looks pretty good” and that it’s “working great.”

Namco Bandai for their part wants to assure fans that their “dream team” is on the job, such as Yoshito Higuchi, the producer and director of the Tales series, Tetsuya Akatsuka, producer and director of Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs., the art/sound director of SoulCalibur and the main development team staff from Tekken.

“We will fully utilize our experience and knowledge in action/fighting game development, technical capability, and organizational strength,” promised Namco Bandai’s Masaya Kobayashi, “and we hereby promise you that we will develop the best and most powerful Super Smash Bros. title ever! Don’t miss it!”

Headline RePLAY – 5.8.12

Today on Headline RePLAY: Star Wars: The Old Republic may have delayed Dragon Age III, Kingdom Hearts may finally be returning to consoles and Dark Souls’ infamous reputation has produced killer sales.

Star Wars: The Old Republic’s subscription slide may have had unintended consequences: a delay in the development of Dragon Age III, says Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter.

“Dragon Age III appears to have slipped to FY:14,” Pachter speculated. “We had previously expected the next Dragon Age to be released in Q4:13, two years after its predecessor. However, we believe that a significant portion of the BioWare team responsible for the game was reassigned to Star Wars in order to create content and fix bugs to keep the game’s audience engaged.”

Despite the MMO’s 1.7 million to 1.3 million dip in active subscriptions, Pachter maintains a bullish view of EA.

“We remain incorrigibly positive on the EA story. Despite a relatively low number of packaged good releases this year, we expect EA to grow revenue and earnings, primarily due to unrivaled digital strength,” Pachter explained.

“We believe EA represents the best opportunity for investors to benefit from continued digital growth for the industry next year, as well as from a likely rebound in packaged goods sales next year.”

Kingdom Hearts has not seen a console release (or a numbered installment) since Kingdom Hearts II came out on the PS2 in 2004. Multiple handheld spinoffs later, series producer Tetsuya Nomura finally reveals that “it’s about time” for Kingdom Hearts return to consoles.

“I also feel that it’s about time that Kingdom Hearts should go back to being on a console,” Nomura told Game Informer.

“I’m not able to disclose any information on what’s coming next or any other future plans, but you may be able to find a hint if you play through Dream Drop Distance to the very end.”

Namco-Bandai has revealed that Dark Souls sold 1.19 million copies in the United States and Europe, proving that video gamers are masochists that enjoy seeing the Game Over screen over and over.

Combined with numbers by From Software, the publisher that handled the distribution of Dark Souls in Japan, the notoriously difficult RPG moved an additional 370,000 copies.

Expect the number of sales to increase when Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition for the PC launches on August 24th.

Headline RePLAY – 4.11.12

Today on Headline RePLAY: Resident Evil 6 sets new heights on the price of collectors editions, classy NES coffee tables for sale and the mysterious Namco Bandai, Capcom and SEGA crossover project is finally revealed.

The price of “premium” or “collector’s editions” have gone up exponentially the past few years as publishers throw in much “exclusive stuff” as they can to justify the high costs. Arguably, inflation plays a role too, but… a grand for a Resident Evil 6 Premium Edition?

No amount of inflation can justify that.

Capcom is asking $1,293 for those with cash to spare for a copy of the game, four different Resident Evil 6 tablet covers (Chris, Leon, Jake and “Secret” versions), and a Leon-replica leather jacket.

At least it comes with free shipping.

Speaking of high prices… how about something that justifies its price tag, like a fully functional NES controller coffee table? It’s not just a maple, mahogany and walnut coffee table disguised as a coffee table—it’s a controller that works.

And it can be yours all for the modest price of $3,500 plus shipping.

Honestly, a better choice for over a grand expense than a leather jacket, a game and some tablet covers.

With bated breath we waited on what project has gotten Capcom, SEGA and Namco Bandai all working together—and we should’ve seen it coming. Andriasang via Famitsu reveals the game as a 3DS strategy RPG titled Project X Zone (pronounced Project Cross Zone).

Historically, Namco Bandai and Capcom worked on a similar title for the PS2 dubbed Namco x Capcom, an action-strategy RPG hybrid which featured characters from games produced by the two companies. Project X Zone is identical in this respect: the game will feature characters representing the three publishers.

Here is a preliminary list of characters:

Capcom
Ryu & Ken (Street Fighter), X and Zero (Mega Man X), Dmitri and Dante (Darkstalkers and Devil May Cry), Chris and Jill (Resident Evil)

SEGA
Shinguji Sakura and Ogami Ichiro (Sakura Wars), Pai and Akira (Virtua Fighter), Kurt and Riela (Valkyria Chronicles), Ulala and Touma (Space Channel 5 and Shining Force EXA)

Namco Bandai
Sanger Somvold (Super Robot Wars), Jin and Ling Xiaoyu (Tekken), KOS-MOS and T-ELOS (Xenosaga), Yuri and Estelle (Tales of Vesperia), Kite and Black Rose (.hack)

The character list is not final—other characters will be introduced at a later date, including hidden ones.

While no details of the combat system has been announced, it has been revealed that characters will fight in teams, like Ryu and Ken.

According to a Famitsu interview with Namco Bandai’s Kensuke Tsukanaka, Project X Zone’s producer, the idea was first conceived by Namco Bandai, who approached Capcom, followed by SEGA.

Project X Zone is forecasted for a 2012 release.

Today on Headline RePLAY: Yet another new Xbox rumor, Mojang’s Minecraft makes bank and Namco-Bandai releases a baffling teaser site.

Another week, another Xbox rumor from yet another anonymous source: this time from Reddit user “MSnerd” who claims that the next Xbox is not a next-gen console but rather a basic system that plays Arcade-style games and media apps with the Kinect.

According to MSnerd, the new Xbox will be an “ARM-based platform” that is “price competitive” with Apple TV. Like other sources, MSnerd predicts the system will be released in late 2013.

MSnerd notes that there is a successor to the 360 in the works, but details are “very hazy” beyond the fact that it will cater towards “core-audiences” and be able to play the same Kinect media apps.

Rovio’s Angry Birds may have a 700 million download head start, but Mojang’s Minecraft is catching up financially with $80 million in earnings since October 2010; in contrast to Rovio’s $100 million in revenues last year.

Minecraft is still nowhere close to Angry Birds’ massive downloads, but the financial reports prove that Mojang’s flagship title has a bright future ahead.

Namco-Bandai has opened up yet another teaser site that leaves much to the imagination: it’s a giant, pulsing black X behind a black background.

…wait, what?

It’s currently unknown if this site has any relation to the Sega and Capcom collaboration or if it’s a new title entirely.

Namco-Bandai continues to troll the internet with these sites that only tells us that they’re working on… something.

Today on Headline RePLAY: Nintendo monopolizes the airwaves with a three-way collaboration you won’t see coming, confirmation for one of the most highly sought RPGs for the Wii and hints of a new Zelda title.

What do Capcom, Namco Bandai and SEGA have in common? Your guess is good as mine! Today Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata announced that the three companies are collaborating for a crossover project on the Nintendo 3DS.

Nintendo revealed a teaser trailer for the project during the announcement. Namco Bandai, meanwhile, released a teaser site which guaranteed that the project will be impossible to predict.

Many online petitions and a full-year later, The Last Story is finally confirmed for release in North America this summer.

XSEED Games will be responsible for the localization of the Wii-exclusive RPG.

The Last Story was made by Mistwalker, the development studio founded by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi.

Eschewing press releases or interviews, Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma decides to send a direct message to fans via the 3DS’s Swapnote; the handheld’s text and picture application:

“Hello, this is Aonuma, Nintendo's Legend of Zelda producer. Did you enjoy The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D? Thanks to everyone, the Legend of Zelda series had a very happy 25th anniversary. I hope you're looking forward to new Legend of Zelda games.”

It is not an official announcement by any means, but it almost screams that a new Zelda title for the 3DS may be on its way.

Headline RePLAY – 1.12.12

Today on Headline RePLAY: Dark Souls for the PC petitioners attracted Namco Bandai’s attention, release date and details are revealed on Pokémon + Nobunaga’s Ambition, and Minecraft creator encourages “pirate now, pay later.”

Namco Bandai wanted to see the “demand” for a PC version of Dark Souls? They got it: 64,000 signatures worth.

Now the company is saying they’re indeed paying attention to fans.

“My boss(es) even came to talk to me about this, after it explodes all around the world," said Namco Bandai forum admin “Shoupinou”. “If you wanted to have the attention of Namco Bandai Games, now you have it. The future is in your hands, and I hope you will keep supporting this.”

“I can't say it's going to happen (I wish I had this power ^^), but I can assure management of the company will know about it, and I think that already a good achievement and a good step forward,” he posted.

The Pokémon and Nobunaga’s Ambition crossover that no one saw coming is slated for release in Japan on March 17 at ¥5,800 or U.S. $75.

Pokémon + Nobunaga’s Ambition is an interesting (or bizarre) 3DS game involving our favorite pocket monsters, samurai generals and the ultimate goal of uniting 17 kingdoms.

Andriasang reports that the game is a SRPG involving Pokémon armies. Abilities are accorded to the Pokémon’s type and generals have exclusive “busho powers” to utilize in battle (i.e. healing your units); one power per general, however.

Like most SRPGs, players are able to recruit wild Pokémon for their army and enlist new generals. Players can even strengthen their army within their very own castle town!

Pokémon + Nobunaga’s Ambition is a collaboration between Nintendo and Tecmo Koei.

In a twist on the videogame industry vs. piracy paradigm, Minecraft creator Markus “notch” Persson told a fan if he can’t afford Minecraft, just pirate it.

“Just pirate it,” Tweeted notch. “If you still like it when you can afford it in the future, buy it then. Also don’t forget to feel bad.”

Notably, this isn’t the first time that notch suggested piracy. At the Game Developers Conference last year, he said that piracy isn’t “theft” and pirates should be looked at as potential customers.
