Headline RePLAY – 4.13.12

Today on Headline RePLAY: A fifth-grader’s wish to share his love of videogames with his blind grandmother, another Capcom misspelling and Keiji Inafune agrees that modern Japanese games “suck.”

10-year-old Dylan Viale had a dilemma: he loved videogames and wanted to share his passion with his grandmother, except she is blind. Dylan’s solution was to design a video game that could be played by her that he later called Quacky’s Quest.

“[Dylan] wanted to figure out a way that he could share his love of video games with her,” Dino Viale, Dylan’s father told Kotaku. “He thought, ‘How can I create something she can enjoy?”

Dylan tackled the problem by downloading a free version of a game design program called GameMaker, ran through its tutorials, learned design concepts and ultimately created a game about an oddly-shaped duck, a Golden Egg and a dark maze.

Quacky’s Quest’s design was simple and ingenious: navigate through a series of dark mazes with sound cues to signal whether the player is heading in the right direction, the wrong way or just bumping into walls.

“Sound was the greatest tool for [Dylan’s] grandmother to navigate through the game. He had to figure out how to associate each move through the maze with sound cues for whether you were doing something correctly or incorrectly,” said Dino.

After a month of development, Dylan decided to enter Quacky’s Quest into the Hidden Valley Elementary School science fair.

He won first place.

Capcom’s inability to spellcheck has struck again, despite its admission on how “embarrassing” it was, this time with a pre-order marketing banner for Resident Evil 6 that spelled ‘mercenaries’ as ‘mercHenaries.’

It was spotted by Twitter user cvxfreak, who has posted a screenshot.

Capcom was quick to discover the issue and has since then fixed the error.

Recently, Fez creator Phil Fish caused quite a stir when he declared that Japanese games “just suck” at this year’s GDC. Keiji Inafune embraced the criticism and called it a “necessary” message for Japanese developers.

“There was a Canadian guy who appeared in a documentary film and did a Q&A afterwards,” Inafune recalled. “And a Japanese person asked what he thought of Japanese games, and he said he thought they sucked. That’s what’s necessary.

“It’s very severe, but very honest,” Inafune told Wired. “Unless Japanese people feel embarrassed from the experience of getting harsh comments, saying [new games] could have been better is not an opinion they would take seriously.

“When they’re embarrassed and they feel obliged to change, it would make a difference.”

Headline RePLAY – 4.11.12

Today on Headline RePLAY: Resident Evil 6 sets new heights on the price of collectors editions, classy NES coffee tables for sale and the mysterious Namco Bandai, Capcom and SEGA crossover project is finally revealed.

The price of “premium” or “collector’s editions” have gone up exponentially the past few years as publishers throw in much “exclusive stuff” as they can to justify the high costs. Arguably, inflation plays a role too, but… a grand for a Resident Evil 6 Premium Edition?

No amount of inflation can justify that.

Capcom is asking $1,293 for those with cash to spare for a copy of the game, four different Resident Evil 6 tablet covers (Chris, Leon, Jake and “Secret” versions), and a Leon-replica leather jacket.

At least it comes with free shipping.

Speaking of high prices… how about something that justifies its price tag, like a fully functional NES controller coffee table? It’s not just a maple, mahogany and walnut coffee table disguised as a coffee table—it’s a controller that works.

And it can be yours all for the modest price of $3,500 plus shipping.

Honestly, a better choice for over a grand expense than a leather jacket, a game and some tablet covers.

With bated breath we waited on what project has gotten Capcom, SEGA and Namco Bandai all working together—and we should’ve seen it coming. Andriasang via Famitsu reveals the game as a 3DS strategy RPG titled Project X Zone (pronounced Project Cross Zone).

Historically, Namco Bandai and Capcom worked on a similar title for the PS2 dubbed Namco x Capcom, an action-strategy RPG hybrid which featured characters from games produced by the two companies. Project X Zone is identical in this respect: the game will feature characters representing the three publishers.

Here is a preliminary list of characters:

Capcom
Ryu & Ken (Street Fighter), X and Zero (Mega Man X), Dmitri and Dante (Darkstalkers and Devil May Cry), Chris and Jill (Resident Evil)

SEGA
Shinguji Sakura and Ogami Ichiro (Sakura Wars), Pai and Akira (Virtua Fighter), Kurt and Riela (Valkyria Chronicles), Ulala and Touma (Space Channel 5 and Shining Force EXA)

Namco Bandai
Sanger Somvold (Super Robot Wars), Jin and Ling Xiaoyu (Tekken), KOS-MOS and T-ELOS (Xenosaga), Yuri and Estelle (Tales of Vesperia), Kite and Black Rose (.hack)

The character list is not final—other characters will be introduced at a later date, including hidden ones.

While no details of the combat system has been announced, it has been revealed that characters will fight in teams, like Ryu and Ken.

According to a Famitsu interview with Namco Bandai’s Kensuke Tsukanaka, Project X Zone’s producer, the idea was first conceived by Namco Bandai, who approached Capcom, followed by SEGA.

Project X Zone is forecasted for a 2012 release.

Today on Headline RePLAY: Another wave of Resident Evil 6 information, GameStop is ordered to post warning signs on games with DLC and players can unlock playable Metal Sonic in Sonic 4: Episode 2.

For whatever reason, Resident Evil 6 information seems to come in zombie-sized hordes, and the latest release from Capcom is no exception with new story details, multiplayer reveals and an updated launch date.

For starters, the mysterious mercenary that we’ve seen in the first trailer is finally revealed as Jack Mueller. He is the son of Albert Wesker and his blood may contain the keys to solving the latest outbreak.

On the multiplayer front, Capcom has announced that Resident Evil 6, like its predecessor, will have both online and split-screen cooperative modes. Unlike Resident Evil 5, players can now drop-in and drop-out as they wish and not be restricted to checkpoints or restart chapters.

Mercenaries mode will also make an appearance in Resident Evil 6 and is unlocked from the start. More multiplayer options like new co-op mechanics are to be announced in the future.

And finally, Capcom has heard the cries of fans that want their Resident Evil fix and has moved the game’s release date from November 20th to October 2nd.

In a decision that may come to a GameStop near you, the United States District Court of Northern California has ordered the retailer to post signs on used games in California stores to warn consumers that certain DLC may cost them.

The lawsuit alleged that games sold by GameStop prevented consumers from accessing certain DLC unless they paid an additional $15, despite video games advertising free DLC with the purchase of the game.

“We are pleased that as a result of this lawsuit, we were able to obtain complete restitution for consumers, with actual money paid out to people who were harmed by GameStop’s conduct,” said Baron and Budd attorney Mark Pifko.

“The in-store and online warnings are important benefit under the settlement as well, because if GameStop discloses the truth to consumers, it is unlikely that they will be able to continue selling used copies of certain games for only $5 less than the price of a new copy,” Pifko explained.

“In fact, we already know that not long after the lawsuit was filed, GameStop lowered prices for used copies of many of the games titled identified in the lawsuit.”

Today on Headline RePLAY: Survival-horror is a hard sell, Square-Enix teases a mystery title and Blizzard has mapped out multiple World of Warcraft expansions post-Mists of Pandaria.

Survival-horror Resident Evil just doesn’t sell as it used to, says Resident Evil: Revelations producer Masachika Kawata.

“Especially for the North American market, I think the series needs to head in that [action-oriented] direction,” Kawata told Gamasutra in an interview. “[Resident Evil’s primary games] need to be an extension of the changes made in Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5.”

“Looking at the marketing data [for survival horror games]… the market is small, compared to the number of units Call of Duty and all those action games sell,” Kawata elaborated. “‘A ‘survival horror’ Resident Evil doesn’t seem like it’d be able to sell those kind of numbers.”

Despite that, Kawata points out that there are opportunities for Capcom to explore survival-horror gameplay outside the series. “So we have our numbered series, and we can say we have a more adventure-oriented version, like a Revelations-style game. And we also have Operation Raccoon City, which is a third-person shooter.

“So I think that by extending the market in this sense, we can still have the numbered titles keep their identity about what Resident Evil is supposed to be, but still expand and hit other markets as well.”

A “secret” Square-Enix title that is slated for release this summer has been revealed in the form of a trailer.

The trailer features illustrations by Castlevania veteran Masaki Hirooka and Square-Enix artist Yusuke Naora. The art on the trailer includes fantastical creatures, fantasy-themed characters and what looks like a battle.

According to Andriasang, a number of Final Fantasy-themed keywords are scattered across the trailer like crystal and summons (i.e. Odin and Diablos).

World of Warcraft’s latest expansion, Mists of Pandaria, is not even released yet and Blizzard is already working on its next expansion and has plans for multiple ones after that!

“I got the pitch from Chris Metzen of what they plan for 6.0 and I’m pretty geeked up about it. They already know what they're going to be doing for multiple expansions ahead,” Blizzard COO Paul Sams told CVG, confirming the MMO’s fifth entry.

“They have an idea - a general framework,” said Sams. “They’re these lore creators. They’re the ones who drive what the world looks like today and what it’ll be like tomorrow and beyond.”

Like an incoming wave of zombies, Capcom is handing out Resident Evil 6 details en masse today via this week’s Famitsu. Are you prepared for the incoming horde of information?
  • RE6 is 50% complete.
  • It’s not a return to the series’ roots, despite the added horror atmosphere.
  • Aiming to be the best entry to the series.
  • The third main character is designed to be relatable to younger audiences.
    • Also will have an unrevealed partner character.
  • The President in the trailer is not Ashley’s dad, but rather his predecessor.
  • Zombies are not creations of the T-Virus
    • Can now wield weapons, run and jump.
  • Introduction of new “J’avo” enemies.
    • Exhibits certain human qualities like the ability to understand speech, work as a group and use weapons.
    • J’avos can regenerate damage via mutations into varied forms to promote unpredictability and player adaptability.
  • Revamped control scheme: ability to slowly move left and right while holding a gun, perform 180 degree turns, slide, roll in any direction, take cover, etc.
It’s a lot of information to handle at once, but nothing a few headshots can’t handle, eh?

ArenaNet publicly flirted with the idea of Guild Wars 2 on consoles before, but never hinted at any serious consideration of it. According to Guild Wars Insider, Guild Wars 2 coming on consoles has abruptly become an actual possibility via details gathered from a conference call.

“When it [console] comes to Guild Wars 2 as we have announced already, we are in the preparation stage. For other titles we are looking at various options as we speak. So once again, nothing has been finalized yet for me to make specific comments now.”

After this made the rounds on the internet, ArenaNet has stepped in to clarify. “I think ‘stay calm, don’t panic’ will become my new mantra,” said ArenaNet’s Martin Kerstein. “We stated multiple times in public that we have a small team working on a console version, but we are fully dedicated to make the most kickass game for PC.”
