Headline RePLAY – 6.25.12

Today on Headline RePLAY: Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says that the gaming community is never-satisfied, the producer of Final Fantasy XI steps down and a Resident Evil-themed restaurant is “comig soon!”

In a rather blunt commentary, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime expressed his frustration with the “insatiable” nature of the gaming community and how they are unable to differentiate between a “phenomenon” and a “ho-hum” title.

“One of the things that, on one hand, I love and, on the other hand, that troubles me tremendously about not only our fanbase but about the gaming community at large is that, whenever you share information, that perspective is, ‘Thank you, but I want more,’” Reggie Fils-Aime told Kotaku on the last day of E3 2012. “‘Thank you, but give me more.’ I mean, it is insatiable.

“And so for years this community has been asking, ‘Where’s Pikmin?’ ‘Where’s Pikmin?’ ‘Where’s Pikmin?’” he continued. “We give them Pikmin. And they say, ‘What else?’

Fils-Aime adds how the latest Mario game and Nintendo Land generated the same “So what’s more?” and “Ho-hum, give me more” responses despite how those titles were in response to community demand.

The Nintendo of America president also argued that the gaming community is “unable to differentiate between a phenomenon and something that is ‘ho-hum’” until they play it, experience it, friends ask about it or until it sells millions of copies.

At Vana Fest 2012, Final Fantasy XI producer Hiromichi Tanaka announced his leave of Square-Enix, citing health reasons and his desire to return to game development as a single creator.

In a mini-interview with Famitsu.com, Tanaka revealed that he suffers from a major illness, to which he didn’t mention specifics, except it was a major cause for his departure.

Tanaka was employed with Square since 1983 and is known for his design work on the first few Final Fantasy titles and as the producer of Xenogears and Chrono Cross.

A Resident Evil (Biohazard)-themed restaurant is “comig soon” to Shibuya, Japan, to serve zombie treats marinated in Capcom’s bad spelling.

The Biohazard Café and Grill not only has zombie-flavored cuisine for sale, but limited edition Resident Evil items too.

It’s opening on July 13 at 11 a.m. and will only be around for a year.

Today on Headline RePLAY: Final Fantasy XIII-2’s ending explained, BioWare responds to the Mass Effect: Deception controversy and Resident Evil for the Game Boy Color is released to the world.

WARNING: INCOMING SPOILER!

Final Fantasy XIII-2 ends with the most infamous words that can ever be put into a videogame: “To Be Continued.” Many interpreted it as a hint for Final Fantasy XIII-3 while others assumed that DLC will conclude what XIII-2 started. At the Taipei Game Show yesterday, Director Motomu Toriyama went on record to explain XIII-2’s ambiguous ending.

According to Impress Watch, translated by Andriasang, Toriyama explained the “To Be Continued” screen was to encourage players to search out the number of Paradox Endings hidden away in the game. Additionally, the intent was to continually expand XIII-2’s world via DLC like the upcoming Lightning Episode.

It’s not an outright denial of a XIII-3 in the future, but it’s not exactly a hint either.

Remember Mass Effect: Deception, the tie-in novel to BioWare’s flagship franchise that was so littered with lore inconsistences that fans protested with a public Google Doc documenting it all out? BioWare isn’t exactly pleased with the novel either:

“The teams at Del Rey and BioWare would like to extend our sincerest apologies to the Mass Effect fans for any errors and oversights made in the recent novel Mass Effect: Deception,” said Chris Priestly, BioWare’s community leader. “We are currently working on a number of changes that will appear in future editions of the novel.”

“We would like to thank all Mass Effect fans for their passion and dedication to this ever-growing world, and assure them that we are listening and taking this matter very seriously.”

It’s a victory to fans and credit to BioWare that errors like these get addressed. Mass Effect: Deception was the first novel in the Mass Effect universe to be written by another author other than Drew Karpyshyn.

Capcom enjoys reminding us that the original Resident Evil exists by re-releasing multiple versions of it, but did you know that there was one being developed for the Game Boy Color? Capcom canned the title late into development due to quality issues, but it lives on in the ownership of an unknown third party.

The unknown owner has acquired two prototype carts of the unreleased game and was willing to upload the ROMs for a price: $2000.

A fundraiser was set up to meet the $2000 goal and was met way before the February 29th deadline, meaning the carts have been released to the public.

Today on Headline RePLAY: Resident Evil 6 is announced and Pac-Man in Street Fighter X Tekken?!

Earlier this week, Capcom released a viral website that hinted at the next Resident Evil game. Today, Resident Evil 6 was revealed by a GameStop promotional display. And tonight, Capcom has officially announced the next entry of the series, which is to be produced by Hiroyuki Kobayashi, the producer of Resident Evil 4.

According to the trailer, the game will involve Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield. Capcom describes the story as follows: “It has been ten years since the incident at Raccoon City and the President of the United States has decided to reveal the truth behind what took place. Raccoon City survivor and personal friend of the President, Leon S. Kennedy, arrives to find the President transformed beyond recognition by a bioterrorist attack. Leon is forced to make the hardest decision he has ever made.

Roster reveals in upcoming fighting games are pretty clockwork, some characters are expected and others fall under the “meh” or “WTF” categories. In this trailer of Street Fighter X Tekken, we get to see a slew of new characters like Juri, Paul, Law, Vega, Balrog, Xiaoyu and… Pac-Man?

And Pac-Man definitely falls under the “WTF” category.

Apparently, Street Fighter X Tekken is throwing out the crossover rulebook and featuring characters not even included in the two franchises. Although, to be fair, a precedent already existed when Capcom announced that Cole from the inFAMOUS series is going to be included for the PlayStation 3 and Vita versions.

Pac-Man is a PlayStation Vita exclusive character in addition to another silhouette that suspiciously looks like Frank West from Dead Rising in a Mega Man outfit.

But seriously, Pac-Man? Really?
