Headline RePLAY – 5.15.12

Today on Headline RePLAY: Blizzard comes to the rescue of Australia GAME’s Diablo III pre-order customers, Capcom re-evaluates on-disc DLC and the last of Final Fantasy XIII-2 DLC is released.

Australia’s GAME retail chain went into voluntary administration yesterday and select stores consequently were devoid of Diablo III on their shelves. Pre-orders were cancelled, nonrefundable and unable to be used for anything else. When Blizzard learned of this, they swooped in with white wings to offer a “free” copy of Diablo III and a refund.

According to Blizzard Community Manager Lylirra, Australian GAME customers can do the following:
  1.  Purchase the digital version of Diablo III from http://www.diablo3.com now or anytime before May 21, 2012.
  2. Download and start playing when the servers go live!
  3. Submit your GAME Australia  preorder/prepurchase  receipt to us before June 30, 2012.
  4. Receive a credit from Blizzard, for the amount you paid in advance to GAME Australia for Diablo III. This credit will be applied to the payment method used for the digital purchase.
Further details on how to submit your GAME Australia receipt is to be revealed by Blizzard’s customer service team at a later date.

Capcom’s downloadable content policies have subject to much outrage this year, with Street Fighter X Tekken being on center stage because of its on-disc DLC. In light of the public outcry, Capcom has begun the “process of re-evaluating” its on-disc DLC policy.

“We would like to assure you that we have been listening to your comments and as such have begun the process of re-evaluating how such additional game content is delivered in the future,” Capcom’s Christian Svensson wrote on Capcom-Unity.

Pre-empting player complaints, Svensson warns that the re-evaluation process has just started recently. “As this process has only just commenced in the past month or so, there will be some titles, where development began some time ago and that are scheduled for release in the coming months, for which we are unable to make changes to the way some of their post release content is delivered.”

Svensson elaborates that Dragon’s Dogma is one such title, where additional DLC is already on-disc and the decision was made at the beginning of the game’s development cycle. He assures fans that despite Dragon’s Dogma being designed around post-launch content, the shipped title will offer 30-40 hours of gameplay and more than 60 hours of side-quests.

“Just wanted people to know in advance the whys, wherefores and where we’re going in the future,” Svensson concludes. “You are being heard. Thanks.”

The march of Final Fantasy XIII-2 DLC ends today with the release of “Lightning’s Story: Requiem of the Goddess,” “Snow’s Story: Perpetual Battlefield,” Black Mage and White Mage costumes for Noel and Serah respectively and 16 new outfits for everyone’s favorite Moogle, Mog.

“Lightning’s Story: Requiem of the Goddess” covers the unseen battle between Lightning and Caius, and the opportunity to recruit XIII-2 Lightning for use. Since this episode deals with the final segment of the game, Square-Enix highly recommends that players complete the main game before playing through the DLC.

“Snow’s Story: Perpetual Battlefield” involves a Coliseum battle with Snow and the Coliseum’s eternal host, the Time Arbiter. Like other Coliseum DLC, Snow and the Time Arbiter can be both recruited upon defeat.

Today on Headline RePLAY: Blizzard acknowledged that Star Wars: The Old Republic impacted World of Warcraft’s subscription numbers, World of Warcraft may go mobile and Capcom is on the hunt for Street Fighter X Tekken hackers.

In a rather candid discussion with Eurogamer, Senior World of Warcraft Producer John Lagrave acknowledged that Star Wars: The Old Republic impacted the MMO’s subscription numbers.

“Of course people are trying Star Wars—our development team are trying Star Wars!” Lagrave told Eurogamer. “I’m one of the few people who’s still playing it actually, but yeah we’ve seen a dip in subs. It certainly has to at least be attributable to The Old Republic, but it’s also attributable to people who want to wait and get Mists of Pandaria, so it’s not surprising.

Lagrave dismissed any ideas for World of Warcraft to switch from a subscription business model to free-to-play. However, the senior producer is open to extending the level cap for the free trial, which currently stands at level 20.

While Blizzard has not released any new subscription numbers since The Old Republic’s launch in late December 2011, the company has begun an aggressive campaign to re-enlist former subscribers in the form of a buffed up Scroll of Resurrection program.

The full World of Warcraft experience may be coming to an iPhone or mobile devices near you. Already there are some parts of Blizzard’s behemoth MMO on mobile devices like access to character sheets, the Auction House and guilds via the World of Warcraft Armory app.

Except it’s easier said than done, Senior World of Warcraft Producer John Lagrave conceded.

“Here’s your platform [iPhone], you’ve got to put an interface, what do you do? So yes we have [looked into mobile] and we always are,” Lagrave told Eurogamer. “Maybe we’ll stumble on the great way to put WoW on the phone - maybe we won’t, but we're certainly looking into it.

“We won’t do it until we think it's decent,” the senior producer continued. “But it’s interesting and the world is evolving towards that little handheld device—I’d have fun on it, that’s absolutely the case. It would be foolish for any game developer to not be looking at that and we’re not - we don’t think—we’re foolish!”

“When we have an epiphany, everyone will know,” said Lagrave. “But for now, no epiphany!”

All forum user Razum wanted was to sit down and play Street Fighter X Tekken online, which was promptly ruined when he encountered Blanka—a DLC character that wasn’t even supposed to be available yet. Apparently, hackers were unlocking DLC characters and using them in online bouts. Capcom is vowing to track down and ban the hackers.

“Yes, we’re seeing news of this. Quite ballsy for folks to be taking hacked Xbox 360s on Live where they are detectable,” confirmed Christian Svensson, Capcom’s senior VP of strategic planning and business development.

“In any event, we already have opened channels of communication with MS on these issues Friday night,” reported Svensson. “If you can capture screens or video of this in action (as some have already) we're working on bans for boxes and accounts with MS for haxxors.”

When the thread devolved to mockery at Capcom, Svensson closed the thread and resolutely said, “We’ll catch them ourselves.”

Today on Headline RePLAY: Microsoft says no new Xbox for 2012, Diablo III finally gets a release date and Capcom concedes that Resident Evil: Revelations spelling error was ‘embarrassing.’

Microsoft today lent credence to rumors that the next Xbox will be unveiled and launched in 2013 when a company spokesman spoke with Bloomberg today.

“There will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon,” David Dennis, a Microsoft spokesman, told Bloomberg. “For us, 2012 is all about Xbox 360.”

According to sources close to Bloomberg, Microsoft plans on presenting the Xbox 360 successor in June 2013 at E3 and released in the same year.

It took convincing the South Korean Game Rating Board, a system overhaul and removing PvP to get here, but Blizzard finally announced a release date for Diablo III: May 15.

Players that pre-purchased Diablo III either on Blizzard’s site or via World of Warcraft’s annual pass will be able to download an encrypted version of the game in advance that will be unlocked on release.

Capcom’s Christian Svensson spoke to Game Informer about a variety of topics from Resident Evil 6 to the development process of Mega Man Legends 3 to the question on everyone’s mind: How does Capcom keep making spelling mistakes like the infamous Resident Evil: Revelations error?

“For Resident Evil: Revelations, I can’t even tell you how many people looked at that package and approved it,” said Svensson. “Nintendo of America, Nintendo Japan, ESRB, I don’t know how many people internally, and our guys in Japan. I can’t come up with an excuse for it. It just happened.  We’re not happy about it.

“There are new processes that were put in place that involve people outside the company,” he explained. “We’ve redefined who has final say over packaging. I’m cautiously optimistic we won’t be seeing this happen again.

“It’s embarrassing. I can’t really sugarcoat it.”

Recently, spelling errors were also found on the promotional box of Asura’s Wrath and ironically with Capcom’s own name at the end of the Steel Battalion trailer.
