Headline RePLAY – 4.2.12

Today on Headline RePLAY: Yet more rumors about the next Xbox, Sony wants first dibs on marketing their next-gen console and Capcom responds to Better Business Bureau complaints about Street Fighter X Tekken.

Not to be outdone by the wave of PlayStation 4 (a.k.a. the “Orbis”) news, new but contradictory details about the next Xbox have emerged:

In contradiction to recent reports that Microsoft’s next-gen console is going digital, VG247 claims that it will have a Blu-ray drive. Despite the inclusion of a Blu-ray drive, however, the console will require a constant internet connection.

According to VG247, the specs of the machine include two GPUs. One of VG247’s sources said, “It’s like two PCs taped together.”

Additionally, it will have “four or six” cores to its CPU: one reserved for the built-in Kinect and another for the console’s OS.

Hot off the heels of all the PlayStation 4 coverage last week, rumors suggest that Sony is seeking to beat Microsoft to the punch in marketing the next-gen console.

“Sony [is] completely in the belief that they have the jump on Microsoft this time,” sources told VG247. “You should be watching the timing of next year’s E3 keynotes, and who’s going to go first.”

One such source tells VG247 that Sony is “confident” that it “will have the console at market ahead of the next generation Xbox next Christmas.”

The Street Fighter X Tekken on-disc DLC drama continues: after receiving complaints from consumers via the Better Business Bureau, Capcom responds that they see little difference in the medium that DLC is delivered.

Capcom recites their official stance that the company believes on-disc DLC provides “more flexible” and “efficient gameplay” for the game’s lifecycle. However, the kicker comes in when Capcom observes there is no distinction between on-disc DLC and DLC delivered later as a download:

“There is effectively no distinction between the DLC being “locked” behind the disc and available for unlocking at a later date, or being available through a full download at a later date, other than delivery mechanism.”

Apparently, to Capcom, completed content that is on disc is equivalent to content released post-launch received through a server, which begs the question: what is legitimate DLC and what was content cut from games to be released at a later date?

Headline RePLAY – 3.19.12

Today on Headline RePLAY: Hideo Kojima hints about a film project, a complaint to the FTC and BBB is lodged against EA and BioWare for Mass Effect 3’s ending and speaking of endings, Tetsuya Nomura talks about Kingdom Hearts 3D’s.

At Smithsonian Museum of Art, Hideo Kojima was asked if he was interested in making films, a lifelong passion that influenced the way he makes videogames.

Kojima noted he is always interested in filmmaking, but does not think Metal Gear Solid would work as one. However, the Metal Gear creator added that something is in the works.

“I’m working on something, and I hope in the near future I’ll have something to announce,” said Kojima.

The battle over Mass Effect 3’s ending has reached new heights when a fan took the cause to the Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission. The complaint lodged against EA and BioWare was for “false advertising.”

“After reading through the list of promises about the ending of the game they made in their advertising campaign and PR interviews, it was clear that the product we got did not live up to any of those claims,” said “El_Spiko” on the BioWare forums.

“This is not something I was happy to do,” continued El_Spiko, “but after the terrible ending that was in no way the product that had been advertised to me and the lack of any kind of response from BioWare/EA to address this, I felt it was one of my only recourses. I’ll be returning my copy of the game before the end of my 30 day return policy if the ending still hasn’t been addressed by then.”

El_Spiko encouraged like-minded fans to do the same and send complaints to the FTC and BBB.

While El_Spiko’s claims may be valid, BioWare has addressed the endings last week and most recently on Facebook.

Kingdom Hearts series director, Tetsuya Nomura, sure likes his surprise endings as he speaks to Famitsu magazine about Kingdom Hearts 3D’s main characters and its ending.

“If I had to say who the key persons were, I’d say they are the silver haired boy and Axel,” said Nomura. “This time at the end of the story, there will be the longest cutscene of the whole series where the true form of Ansem and Xemnas, as well as their goals and many other truths will be revealed all at once.”

Nomura added Kingdom Hearts 3D should take about 35 hours to complete.
